Our Story

Born in the Heart of the Waterberg

Steyn Africa Safaris was founded in 2021 by husband-and-wife team Gerard and Jo-anne Steyn, not simply as a business, but as a life built around the African bushveld they both grew up calling it home. Their roots run deep in the heart of the Waterberg Biosphere, a region known for its untouched wilderness, dramatic mountains, ancient landscapes, and incredible biodiversity. Furthermore, the Waterberg is recognized by UNESCO as a protected biosphere reserve and is considered one of South Africa’s most remarkable natural areas. Here, vast plains, rugged cliffs, free-roaming wildlife, rare bird species, and some of the oldest ecosystems on the continent come together to create a truly unique environment. As a result, visitors are immersed in an authentic African wilderness where mornings begin with the call of francolins, dust rises beneath buffalo hooves, and sunsets transform the bushveld into shades of deep orange and gold.

Gerard Steyn

A Lifetime in the African Bush

For Gerard, this land is more than scenery; it is home in the truest sense. In fact, he grew up on the very property where Steyn Africa Safaris operates today. From a young age, he developed a deep respect for wildlife, conservation, and the traditions of ethical hunting. Over time, his passion for the bush, combined with years of practical experience in the field, shaped the vision behind the outfit. Today, Gerard serves as the outfitter, professional hunter, and driving force behind every safari experience. Above all, his goal has always been simple: to offer authentic African safaris that are conducted properly, honestly, and with attention to every detail.

Jo-anne Steyn

The Creative Force Behind the Experience

Likewise, Jo-anne was raised in the same area and shares the same deep connection to the Waterberg. With a natural eye for creativity, wildlife, and storytelling, she plays an essential role in every aspect of the business. From administration and client communication to photography, media creation, website design, and marketing, she works behind the scenes to ensure every guest’s experience is memorable long before they arrive in camp. In addition, her photography captures not only the hunt itself, but also the emotion, atmosphere, and beauty of Africa.

Our Philosophy

Personalized Safaris, Lasting Relationships

Something future generations of hunters and families can trust and return to year after year. They believe success is earned through hard work, honesty, loyalty, and treating people the right way. Therefore, every safari is carefully planned and personalized, ensuring that no client feels like just another booking.
