HUNTING CAPE BUFFALO

Africa’s Most Respected Dangerous Game Animal

Weighing over 800 kg and standing up to 140 cm at the shoulder, the Cape Buffalo has rightfully earned its reputation as one of Africa’s most formidable animals. Consequently, it is often referred to as the “Black Death” and is widely regarded as one of the continent’s most challenging dangerous game species.

Cape Buffalo are highly social animals and can often be found in herds numbering well over a hundred individuals. However, the true intrigue lies with the smaller groups of mature bulls that spend much of their time in thick cover and muddy wallows near seasonal and perennial water sources. As these older bulls separate from the protection of the main herd, they become increasingly independent and defensive. Furthermore, their habit of spending hours wallowing in mud has earned them the famous nickname “Dagga Boys,” a term derived from the muddy areas they favor. As a result, these solitary bulls are often considered the ultimate trophy for many dangerous game hunters.

The Ultimate Cape Buffalo Experience

Hunt Africa’s Most Unpredictable Dangerous Game Animal

Harvesting a mature Cape Buffalo trophy requires skill, patience, determination, and respect for one of Africa’s most formidable animals. As one of the most unpredictable members of the Big Five, a buffalo hunt is never entirely predictable. Consequently, every encounter is unique, and hunters must be prepared for an experience that is both challenging and rewarding. At Steyn Africa Safaris, our goal is to provide an authentic, on-foot Cape Buffalo hunt that showcases the true spirit of African dangerous game hunting.

It takes more than good shooting to hunt buffalo—it takes understanding buffalo. Therefore, much of your hunt will be spent tracking fresh spoor through the African bush, often under the hot African sun. However, while you are following them, there is always the possibility that they have already detected your presence. Although Cape Buffalo can sometimes allow hunters to approach surprisingly close, they should never be underestimated. Their intelligence, awareness, and unpredictable nature are precisely what make them one of Africa’s most respected dangerous game species

SHOT PLACEMENT

Broadside Shot Placement

The broadside shot is widely regarded as the ideal shot on a Cape buffalo. When the buffalo is standing perfectly side-on, place the shot directly behind the shoulder, approximately one-third of the way up from the brisket. This position allows the bullet to pass through both lungs and, depending on the angle, may also reach the heart.

A well-placed broadside shot provides the largest vital area and offers the highest probability of a quick, ethical harvest. Due to the buffalo’s heavy muscle mass, thick skin, and overlapping ribs, bullet selection and precise shot placement are critical.

Charge Shot Placement

A charging Cape buffalo presents one of the most challenging and dangerous shot opportunities in Africa. The target area is considerably smaller than on a broadside animal, and the hunter must remain calm under extreme pressure.

When a buffalo is coming directly toward you, the shot should be aimed at the center of the chest, just below the boss and between the shoulders. The objective is to drive the bullet through the chest cavity and into the heart, major blood vessels, or spine.

If the buffalo’s head is lowered during the charge, the angle becomes more difficult. In these situations, an experienced professional hunter will guide the shot placement based on the animal’s posture and distance.
